Lactation Consultation
Lactation consultation is a service provided by trained professionals to help mothers with breastfeeding. It involves one-on-one support and guidance from an experienced lactation consultant.
Breastfeeding can be challenging for many new mothers, especially in the first few weeks after giving birth. Lactation consultants provide personalized support and assistance in overcoming common breastfeeding difficulties.
Common Breastfeeding Difficulties
Some common breastfeeding difficulties that mothers may face include:
Trouble latching on or positioning the baby at the breast
Low milk supply
Engorgement (breast fullness and discomfort)
Sore nipples
Plugged ducts or mastitis (breast infection)
Having a lactation consultant by your side can help you address these challenges and find solutions that work for you and your baby.
Benefits of Lactation Consultation
Personalized Support: Every mother’s breastfeeding journey is unique, and a lactation consultant can provide individualized support tailored to your specific situation.
Expert Guidance: Lactation consultants are trained professionals with extensive knowledge and experience in breastfeeding. They can offer evidence-based information and guidance to help you overcome challenges and meet your breastfeeding goals.
Improved Breastfeeding Experience: Breastfeeding with the support of a lactation consultant can lead to a more positive experience for both mother and baby. Mothers often report feeling more confident and empowered after working with a lactation consultant.
Prevention of Complications: A lactation consultant can help prevent common breastfeeding complications, such as sore nipples and mastitis, by addressing any issues early on and providing proper guidance.
Emotional Support: Breastfeeding can be an emotional journey for mothers, and a lactation consultant can provide much-needed emotional support and reassurance during this time.
When to Seek Lactation Consultation
It is recommended that you seek lactation consultation if you are experiencing any challenges with breastfeeding or if you have any concerns about your baby's feeding and growth. You can also seek consultation during pregnancy to prepare for breastfeeding and after birth to ensure a smooth start.
Some reasons to consider lactation consultation include:
Difficulty latching on or positioning the baby at the breast
Low milk supply
Nipple pain or damage
Engorgement or plugged ducts
Concerns about baby's weight gain or growth
Premature birth or special needs of the baby
Returning to work and continuing breastfeeding
What to Expect During a Lactation Consultation
During a lactation consultation, the consultant will assess your breastfeeding technique and your baby's latch, suckling reflex, and overall feeding behaviour. They will also ask about your medical history and any challenges you may face.
Based on their assessment, the consultant will provide personalized recommendations and guidance to address any issues or concerns. This may include techniques to improve latching and positioning, tips for increasing milk supply, or strategies for managing common breastfeeding problems.
